Nicholas Garton will soon graduate from the journalism program at Madison College, where he has served as a reporter and sports editor for The Clarion newspaper. He is now a reporter in the Madison365 Academy program.

Rank your top five MCs. Drake is my favorite musical artist, if that’s what you’re asking. But the greatest MC of all time is obviously Dr. Dre.

Which motivates you more: doubters or supporters? Well I think it’s a combination of things for me. Recently I had someone from a prominent local magazine completely disregard my ability and be extraordinarily and shockingly disrespectful to me during a job interview. That type of thing made me go to a different level in my production.

But I think that to sustain that new level, it helps to have supporters because ultimately they’re the people you draw the most energy from.

Why do you live in Madison? I grew up just outside of madison in Waunakee. I’m kind of a homebody!

What three leaders in Madison under 50 have impressed you the most? Over this weekend I got a chance to talk to Alder Maurice Cheeks and I was really impressed speaking with him. He was articulate and thoughtful about the city and where the city needs to go.

What’s the biggest stumbling block in Madison to turning the corner on our racial disparities?  I think the biggest thing is that Madison, like Milwaukee, is a very segregated city. People from certain backgrounds here literally don’t have contact with other races on a daily basis. And so a lot of people just live off of stereotypes.

What are your top three priorities at this point in your life? To become a great writer, to keep making the most out of opportunities I get in my career, and just keep above water in general.

You’ll soon graduate from Madison college’s journalism program. Most people feel journalism is a dying craft. Why choose to focus on Journalism? I think that with President Trump in office it is more vital than ever for journalists to exist. I have never seen more dishonest people in my life which is a major statement considering some of the places I’ve been.

What superhero would you rather be: Black Lighting or Black Panther? Black Panther. He was awesome in Civil War.

Your parents own the restaurant Quiveys Grove. By watching them, what have you learned about owning a small business? My dad started Quiveys Grove. For my dad the most important thing was how you treat other people and how consistent you are in dealings with other people. My mom definitely has continued in that vein and that’s why they have survived in business for the entirety of my lifetime.

Russel Westbrook or James harden? James Harden is better. He can lift his entire team with his style of play. Westbrook is great but his greatness only serves his own statistics and doesn’t really translate into anything greater for his team. Harden does that.

What’s the one thing you can’t live without? Basketball!

Name your top five actors of all time and why? Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro and Daniel Day-Lewis. For different reasons. The last three are just great actors and watching them meld into characters is great. Cruise and Ford don’t have the same range but are so box office and fun, that they make the list!
