Arvina Martin has defeated Bradley Campbell for the open District 11 seat on the Madison Common Council winning 60 percent of the vote. Martin, a member of the Ho Chunk nation, appears to be the first Native American on the Council.

“As far as I know, it’s a long-overdue first for Madison,” Common Council President Mike Verveer, who has served on the Council for more than 20 years, said in a message to Madison365.

“I’m excited and in shock and humbled and all of the things,” Martin told Madison365 moments after the last returns came in. “Lots of feelings. This is not necessarily what I was expecting.”

Despite being surprised at the victory, Martin said she’s ready to get to work.

“I’ve got to make sure I know what’s going to be happening in that first meeting,” she said. “I’m going to have to study again.”
