Under pressure, the assistant chief of the Estherwood Police Department in Louisiana has resigned after sharing a racist meme on Facebook, a picture of a cartoon mother drowning her young daughter in the bathtub. Underneath the picture, it reads “When your daughters (sic) first crush is a little Negro boy.”

Wayne Welsh, assistant police chief in Estherwood, La., posted that to his Facebook page on Sunday. Social media users grabbed a screenshot of the officer’s post and it quickly went viral.

“When I found out about it, I couldn’t believe I had to call him. I called him at work and asked him what the hell is going on,” Estherwood Police Chief Ernest Villejoin told local news outlet KADN. “He done it. He said it and he realized what he had done after he done it and he deleted it but it was too late.”

Welsh’s first instinct was not to apologize for the picture, however. He made a follow-up post on Monday, according to screenshots posted to the City Hall Facebook page, that read: “It’s not against the law to share something on Facebook. It’s social media. Internet,” he posted.

Facebook friends of his also defended him. Welsh also posted about people using the “race card” and that the “Facebook police” were mad at him.

Later, Welsh would backpedal with a half-apology. “Well, I’m sorry for what happen. Ya [sic] have a blessed day.”
