President Trump has told senior aides that he has decided to remove Steve Bannon, the embattled White House chief strategist who helped win the 2016 election, two administration officials told the New York Times.
The firing comes after Bannon gave an interview in the liberal magazine American Prospect in which he contradicted the president on North Korea and asserted that he was able to make personnel changes at the State Department. Trump has been reportedly fuming over the interview since it was published.
It also comes after a difficult week for the president in which he blamed “both sides” for the violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Bannon, the former editor of Breitbart News, is often seen as a hero of the alt-right, white nationalist movement.
