Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin will step down at the end of this season.
The announcement comes a little more than a week after negotiating a pair of trade-deadline deals to send CF Carlos Gomez and OF Gerardo Parra away for a handful of promising prospects.
The resignation, first reported on Twitter by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Haudricourt, ends Melvin’s 13-year tenure with the Brewers.
Melvin will stay on in an advisory capacity, and Whitefish Bay native Craig Counsell remains the field manager, Brewers owner Mark Attanasio told reporters at ownership meetings in Chicago.
The Brewers have won 1,004 games in Melvin’s tenure, and lost 1,052. The team progressed as far as Game 6 of the National League Championship series in 2011, and earned a wild-card berth in the playoffs in 2008, aided in part by Melvin’s midseason acquisition of right-handed power pitcher C.C. Sabathia.
The Brewers seemed poised for another playoff berth in 2014, before a late-season meltdown left them on the outside looking in when October came, and ultimately led to the dismissal of former manager Ron Roenicke.
Attanasio told reporters that a list of candidates to replace Melvin has already been compiled, but that the transition will not be abrupt.
