The City of Madison is joining cities across the country today in proclaiming this Cities Day of Immigration Action. American is a nation of immigrants, and wave after wave of immigrants seeking a better life has built our nation and brought significant social, economic, and cultural benefits to communities nationwide.

At this evening’s meeting, the Madison Common Council will approve a resolution proclaiming March 21, 2017, as “Cities’ Immigration Day of Action.”

The resolution reads, in part: “Mayors across American have called on the federal government to enact comprehensive immigration reform and enforce the nations’ immigration laws in a humane manner that does not disrupt the lives of City residents, and, in the absence of federal immigration reform, Mayors and their cities seek strategies to protect and secure all their residents while ensuring that local law enforcement is focused on community policing.”

“The City of Madison continues to speak,” said Madison Mayor Paul Soglin. “Our community welcomes everyone as a person of value. Our immigrant community brings richness to this city that we cherish and embrace.”

This evening’s action resolves that Madison’s solidarity with the immigrant community and asserts the City’s commitment to the values of diversity, inclusiveness, and equality.
