Clarke Rules Out Senate Run

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke will not run for the United States Senate, he told Vicki McKenna on WISN Radio in Milwaukee.

Despite a national organization forming to raise money and convince him to run against incumbent Tammy Baldwin next year, Clarke said he wants “to put this to rest because it’s becoming a distraction.”

The organization, which is backed by Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman and run by a group of former politicians and Congressional staff, is “a scam PAC, basically,” Clarke said.

“I’m interested in being the sheriff of Milwaukee County, period,” he told McKenna.

It wasn’t the only such distraction. Clarke, a conservative who runs as a Democrat, was an early and vocal supporter of Donald Trump and recently announced, and then unannounced, that he’d be taking a high-level post in the Department of Homeland Security.

Clarke has been dogged with trouble in the Milwaukee County Jail, including several inmate deaths and faces a primary election challenge from Earnell Lucas, a former Milwaukee police officer and current director of security for Major League Baseball.
