Several dozen demonstrators have gathered outside the Madison Police Department in downtown Madison this morning to protest recent police shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota and to demand community control over the police.

The demonstration was led by Freedom Inc., Young Gifted and Black (YGB) and Groundwork. Protestors gathered on the corner of Carroll and Doty chanting for justice and lined the sidewalks around the building carrying a giant sign that said “Community Control Over The Police.” Individual signs said things like “Are you an officer of the peace?” “Black lives matter more than white feelings” and “Business as usual = murder of black people.”

Police killed Philando Castile in Twin Cities suburb Falcon Heights last week and Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge prior to that.
