Darrell Newton has been appointed Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He will also serve as associate vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Dr. Newton has been serving as associate dean in the Fulton School of Liberal Arts at Salisbury University in Maryland. He joined the Salisbury faculty in 2003 and was promoted to full professor of communications in 2015. Earlier he was a lecturer at three campuses of the University of Wisconsin System.

Newton holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communications with an emphasis in broadcast journalism. He earned a master’s degree in English in 1981 and a second master’s degree in communication arts from UW-Madison in 1996, emphasizing transnationalism and television studies.

After extensive research in England on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Newton earned his Doctorate in Communication Arts in May 2002 with an emphasis in Media and Cultural Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Among other publications, he completed the book Paving the Empire Road: BBC Television and Black Britons for Manchester University Press, and is currently editing a second book, Adjusting the Contrast: British Television and Constructs of Race, also from Manchester.
