San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee died early this morning. He was 65.

Former Mayor Willie Brown told KGO-TV in San Francisco that Lee had died of cardiac arrest.

“It is with profound sadness and terrible grief that we confirm that Mayor Edwin M. Lee passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 1:11 a.m. at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital,” the mayor’s office said in a statement. “Family, friends and colleagues were at his side. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Anita, his two daughters, Brianna and Tania, and his family.”

In 2011, Lee became the first Asian American mayor of San Francisco. Lee was well-known for embracing the “Sanctuary City” label and for working to combat homelessness.

Board of Supervisors President London Breed has taken over duties as Acting Mayor.
