Effort Underway to Recall Fitchburg Mayor Over Proposed Budget

Fitchburg community members and leaders have called a press conference for 12:30 pm Tuesday to announce the campaign to recall Fitchburg Mayor Jason Gonzalez, according to a Facebook post by Caliph Muab-El.

“We are not letting up, momentum is building and we will fight to the bitter end for our children and their futures,” Muab-El wrote in the post.

Muab-El told Madison365 that Mothers in Neighborhoods will lead the recall. Community leaders Sina Davis, Pearla V., Carmella, Eugene Crisler’El, Andrea Shorter and others will speak at the press conference.

To launch a recall, the committee will need nearly 2,800 signatures — 25 percent of the total number of votes cast by Fitchburg residents in the last gubernatorial election, which was almost 12,000 according to Dane County Clerk data.

Maub-El said the committee does not yet have a candidate chosen.

On September 22, Gonzalez proposed a 2018 budget that removes $110,000 for local nonprofit organizations that serve Fitchburg’s underprivileged populations and youth, including a $50,000 agreement with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dane County to transport and feed children after school.
