Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisolm has charged former Milwaukee Police Officer Dominique Heaggan-Brown with first-degree reckless homicide in the fatal shooting of Sylville Smith.

The August 13 shooting sparked destructive riots across the Sherman Park neighborhood.

Chisolm did not formally announce the charge, but court documents detailing the charge appeared online today, and Heaggan-Brown made his initial appearance in court this morning.

Chisolm’s criminal complaint alleges, based on police body-camera video, that Heaggan-Brown shot Smith once in the arm as Smith was throwing a gun over a fence, and that Smith was unarmed when he was fatally shot.

Heaggan-Brown was fired by the Milwaukee Police Department in October over an unrelated matter.
