A $184,268 grant from the US Department of Education will help minority and low-income students at Madison College expand their international education experience including scholarships for study abroad.

The Title VI Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language grant will be matched through a combination of staff time, scholarships and other support for a total of $370,000 over the next two years. Madison College is one of only seven community colleges in the country to receive the grant.

“We have heard from our local employers that they want graduates with global understanding and competencies,” said Dr. Geoff Bradshaw, director of the Center for International Education. “The grant will help us make sure all of our programs have some exposure to global competency.”

Other initiatives include internationalizing curriculum across the college, building a culture of internationalization and expanding depth and breadth of study abroad programs. In addition, the college plans to open a global and multicultural center in 2017.

Grant funds will also support partnerships to provide transfer pathways for students to pursue advanced global studies.
