The results of the Nov. 8 election immediately brought out a range of responses from many people in our community: disbelief, fear, anger, anxiety. Yet within hours, these feelings were followed by a wave of coming together. Neighbors held potlucks, friends gathered to support one another, acquaintances greeted with big hugs and community groups gathered the people they serve to offer extra support.

Noting this environment and seeking to build upon our city’s longing for hope, Ald. Maurice Cheeks is organizing a public ‘Post-Election Popup Summit’ in Madison that will be about politics, progress and power and how they intersect in Madison, our state and our nation. The event will take place at 100State, 30 W. Mifflin St., 6th floor on Saturday, Nov. 19, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

“Now that this election is over and the results have begun to sink in, it has never been clearer that we must strive to advance progress and create solutions within our community,” said Cheeks. “Despair over state and national leadership is understandable. However, rather than giving in to negativity, we can come together and use this as an opportunity to offer a blueprint that can be followed and emulated in other cities. We can’t expect to look to the national level to move our country forward for all its citizens, so it is up to us to lead locally.”

Featured speakers at the event will include: Jenni Dye, Dane County Board & One Wisconsin Now; Brandon Miles Weathersby, Democratic Party of Wisconsin; and Maurice Cheeks, Madison Common Council. In the spirit of a pop-up, grassroots event, the “unconference” agenda will be set by the people who attend.
