Most of the governors running for re-election this year ended 2017 in a strong position, according to Morning Consult’s Governor Approval Rankings released Feb. 1. However, Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin ended 2017 with one of the worst approval ratings in the nation.

A survey of gubernatorial job approval levels in all 50 states found that Walker’s disapproval figures puts him in the bottom 10 of all governors in the survey. Walker is currently running for a third term in 2018. His 43 percent approval figure was the 13th lowest in the survey.

The latest installment of the quarterly rankings are based on surveys with 253,393 registered voters nationwide conducted online from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31

The online survey found 43 percent of respondents approved of Walker’s job performance while 50 percent disapproved in the final quarter of 2017, with 8 percent of respondents expressing no opinion.

Bill Walker (I-Alaska) is the least popular governor running for re-election this year, with net approval of -26%. A Republican-turned-independent, Walker also finished last year in a weak position, as the 10th least popular, after posting the largest net slide (-19 percentage points) of any governor during the fourth quarter. Fifty-five percent of registered voters in Alaska disapproved of his work in office, compared with 29 percent who approved.
