The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award Commission is beginning the process of selecting the 2017 award recipients for 2017 City-County Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award.

This award is presented annually to individuals who have made outstanding and significant contributions to their community in the spirit of harmony towards making our city and county an ideal place in which to live. Two community members will receive the Humanitarian Award, one Emerging Leader (ages 13-25) and one Humanitarian (ages 26 and over). The Commission hopes that through this award they can identify and recognize new leaders and/or efforts by long-term leaders.

Last year, there were a record number of candidates to choose from and each has made significant contributions to our community making the selection of one person difficult. Z! Haukeness was selected to win the 20167 award for his extensive work in restorative justice, including teaching non-violent conflict resolution, conflict avoidance, ways to unite community, and how to engage in effective goal-oriented dialogue.

Nominees need to have made outstanding and significant contributions in the spirit of Dr. King toward improving brotherhood, sisterhood, and harmony leading to making our community an ideal place in which to live. The commissioners will then consider how well the candidates upheld the values of Dr. King, with extraordinary personal commitments to promoting racial diversity, advancing social justice, and exemplifying the non-violent philosophy of Dr. King.

The individual selected will be announced and the award presented during the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration at the 32nd annual Madison and Dane County observation, January 16th at the Overture Center’s Capitol Theatre.
