Sagashus Levingston

Domestic Abuse Intervention Services has announced today that Sagashus Levingston will be the keynote speaker for the 2018 DAIS Celebrate Independence Luncheon on June 19 at the Monona Community and Convention Center.

Levingston is founder of Infamous Mothers, LLC, and an award-winning educator and social entrepreneur. She was recognized as a 2016 Outstanding Woman of Color by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At UW, she is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of English completing a dissertation titled Infamous Mothers: Bad Moms Doing Extraordinary Things. While her research focuses primarily on literature, it is informed by theory and criticism from rhetoric, motherhood studies and black feminism. This work inspired her coffee-table book, simply titled, Infamous Mothers, which will be for sale at the Luncheon with an opportunity for book signing following the program.

DAIS is a Madison non-profit with the mission of empowering those affected by domestic violence and advocate for social change through support, education and outreach. DAIS operates the County’s only domestic violence shelter, a 24-hour helpline, texting helpline, legal advocacy, emergency safety planning, support groups, children’s programming and primary prevention and education programs.

The Celebrate Independence Luncheon, presented by Sub-Zero Wolf, is an empowering event hosted by DAIS that raises awareness about the pervasive and far-reaching effects of domestic violence in the community while honoring the courageous journey of survivors and the advocates who support them.

Levingston will specifically highlight the role of the local community in eradicating violence and advocating for a safer, more just society for all. Tickets are available here.
