The instructions on the screen say to "push button B to control the system," but button B on the game controller is missing.

Select a World Closing Reception will be held Friday, Feb. 19, 6-9 p.m. at the Arts + Literature Laboratory, 2021 Winnebago St.

An exhibition of recent works by collaborative duo Simone and Max investigates the potential of the public screen as a mobilizing force to build empathy, action, and long-term responsibility. The hybridity of forms in Select a World—from satellite photographs of islands threatened by sea-level rise, to a détourned fossil fuel company logo, to a fictional video game satirizing climate change tourism—reflect the degree to which contemporary life is mediated by screens.

Drawing influence from artists such as Kelly Richardson and Cory Arcangel, and from experiences participating in the People’s Climate March, ARTCOP21, and a recent cruise-line tour of the Gulf of Alaska, Simone and Max will discuss themes of agency, complicity, and escapism as they relate to their images, objects, and audiovisual installations.
