Second-ranked Sun Prairie boys' basketball team is headed to state for the first time ever.

Senior Marlon Ruffin scored 30 points as the Sun Prairie Cardinals routed Big 8 Conference rival Madison East, 82-58, in a Division 1 sectional championship game on Saturday night stamping their ticket to their first-ever WIAA State Tournament.

Sophomore Jalen Johnson chipped in 24 points for the second-ranked Cardinals (25-1) who beat East for the third time this season. Sun Prarie’s only loss this season was Dec. 16 to Madison Memorial, 54-51.

On Thursday, the Cardinals beat Madison La Follette, 63-56, in a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal Thursday night at Janesville Parker to advance to the sectional championship.

The Cardinals will play in a state semifinal game Friday against Brookfield East at the Kohl Center in Madison. Tip-off is 8:15 p.m.
