Hospitalizations continue to decline as Dane County reports 221 new cases

Public Health of Madison and Dane County reported 221 new cases this morning which gives the county a new cumulative total of 30,269. Recovered cases grew to 26,835 as active cases dropped down to 3,326, or 11 percent of all cases.

Today, the number of people currently hospitalized in Dane County — both Dane County residents and people from neighboring counties —  dropped from 136 to 130. Hospitalizations in the county for COVID-19 have dropped 24 percent or a total of 41 people since December 8 when it was 171. Patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the ICU also dropped from yesterday’s reported 39 to 35.

For Dane County residents, the number of people ever hospitalized for COVID-19 has increased to 899. Of the two new hospitalizations, both were white men, with one person in their 70s and one in their 80s.

The number of hospitalizations for residents in the county continues to impact adults 60 and older the most for the past few weeks. Madison365 has graphed that growth from information gathered daily from PHMDC’s data which reflects that the number of hospitalized cases in those in their 90s grew by 16.4 percent as adults in their 60s grew by 16.1 percent, and adults in their 20s by 15.4 percent since November 29.

Hospitalizations also continue to significantly impact our communities of color with those who are American Indian have grown 16.7 percent and Black people grew by 13.7 percent. The percentage of hospitalizations for people who identify as Hispanic/Latinx in our community have grown 6.9 percent for the past two weeks.

The 221 new cases were attributed to dates earlier this week with 129 added to December 12 while 16 were added to December 11, increasing that day’s total to 190 and 23 added to December 10. The rest of the cases were distributed among dates earlier this week. The 7 day average of cases per day is now at 170.1 while the 14 day average is now at 217.3..

The percentage of the positive for these days also adjusted with December 12 reportedly at 3.2 while December 11 has been updated to 4.7. For December 10, the percentage of positive has adjusted to 3.1 and December 9 has updated to 5.5. The 7 day average is now at 4.8 while the 14 day average as of December 12 is at 5.8.

Age groups between 10-79 all grew by double digits today with those in their 30s growing the most with 53 new cases or 24 percent of all new cases reported. Adults in their 20s grew by 45, those in their 50s by 29, children aged 10-19 by 23, adults in their 60s by 22, and adults in their 70s by 12. In single digit increases, adults in their 80s by eight, children under 10 by six and adults in their 90s by three.

When looking at our communities of color, those who are Hispanic/Latinx grew by 38 new cases or 17.2 percent of all new cases broken down by ethnicity. They continue to make up 15.6 percent of all cases. Black people in our community grew by 12 or 5.4 percent of all new cases and continue to make up 7.8 percent of all cases ever in Dane County. Asian people in our community grew by eight new cases and make up 3.5 percent of all cases while American Indian/Alaskan Native grew by one new case and are 0.8 percent of all cases in Dane County..

Looking at growth over the past two weeks, infection in those in their 90s grew by 24.4 percent as adults in their 80s grew by 16.1 percent. Adults in their 70s grew by 14.6 percent and adults in their 60s by 13.6 since November 29.

In terms of case growth for the past two weeks for our communities of color, cases among Black people have grown by 12.2 percent while Asian people have grown by 11.5 percent. Those who identify as Hispanic/Latinx have grown 11.0 percent while American Indians in our community have grown by 10.0 percent during this same period.

UW reported yesterday 11 new positive cases in on-campus testing from students, one positive case in off-campus testing from a student and one new positive cases from on-campus testing for a UW staff member. These new positives have been attributed to December 12. In total, there are 4,736 positive students and 490 positive employees – including two additional positives from off-campus testing attributed to earlier date. This gives UW a cumulative total of 5,226 cases since tracking began for campus. The 7 day average of cases is now at 12.7 for both students and staff in on and off campus testing as of December 12. The 7 day average for the percentage of positives for students is now at 1.1 percent for students and 0.9 percent for employees from on campus testing.
