A grant for $35,000 was recently given to Madison College to continue its efforts through the African Initiative announced in Fall 2022 that will develop and support study abroad programs in East Africa.

It is hoped that the grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of State’s Increase and Diversity Education Abroad for U.S. Students (IDEAS) Program, will increase interest and participation in African study abroad programs, including a new short-term program in Kenya set to launch in May 2024.

The grant will also involve intentional, high impact support and engagement for underrepresented students in partnership with Madison College’s Retention Initiatives & Student Engagement Programs (RISE).

“The purpose of the IDEAS grant is to diversify the types of locations where students study abroad and encourage more underrepresented students to participate in these programs,” said Dr. Geoff Bradshaw, associate vice president of global strategy, in a Madison College press release. “This program will meet both of these goals by building new study abroad experiences in East Africa for our Madison College students.”

Madison College joins 33 other colleges across 28 U.S. states to be awarded a grant through the IDEAS Program, with many of those colleges being community and minority-serving institutions, according to a press release from Madison College. This program also serves as an effort to get American people engaged in foreign policy.

“For many community or technical college students, the idea that they could travel to Africa as part of their studies is not even within their realm of imagination,” Bradshaw continued in the release. “This program will help make students aware of these possibilities and provide structured support before, during, and after the program to help students make the most of their experiences.”
