A very talented Avant-Garde Jazz Ensemble will perform in Madison on Saturday, June 18, 8 p.m. at the Arts + Literature Laboratory, 2021 Winnebago Street.

Arts + Literature Laboratory (ALL) invites you to a rare, not-to-be-missed performance by one of the key figures in avant-garde jazz, Roscoe Mitchell, and his trio featuring Junius Paul (bass) and Vincent Davis (drums). Mitchell has long been a leader and influencer of innovations in jazz, resurrecting overlooked woodwind instruments with the mastery of a virtuoso. He spans extreme registers and blends the paradigms of composed and improvisational jazz. The New York Times aptly called him an iconoclast. Mitchell successfully breaks from tradition and disrupts our assumptions of his art form.

Arts + Literature Laboratory is a collaborative arts space that has partnered with local artist Thomas Ferrella, to invite Mitchell from his home in Oakland, California. This is the start of an endeavor to attract more progressive jazz to our city, to give Madisonian's the chance to experience and deepen their passion for the music and the culture of innovation that surrounds it.

Roscoe Mitchell is an avant-garde jazz and contemporary music icon, currently serving as the Darius Milhaud Chair of Composition at Mills College (CA). He is a founding member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), the Trio Space, and founder of the Creative Arts Collective (MI). He also leads several ensembles. His oeuvre boasts hundreds of albums and compositions and the development of the Percussion Cage, consisting of instruments of worldwide origin and found objects. Mitchell’s honors include a John Cage Award (FOC), multiple grants from National Endowment for the Arts, Meet the Composer and Mutable Music.
