The United States Capitol building is on lockdown after hundreds of pro-Trump protesters have rushed the building, spurred on by an incendiary speech given by the president where he urged people to pressure Congressional leaders to overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s victory on Wednesday.
The protesters have breached exterior security barriers, and video footage shows protesters gathering and some clashing with police near the Capitol building, CNN has reported. CNN personnel inside the House building report hearing fireworks and chants of “USA! USA!”
The invaders did not breach the congressional chambers, but the certification process was stopped and lawmakers were told to take shelter. Lawmakers were expected to vote to affirm Biden’s victory later today.
