With 83 percent of the vote, Alder Maurice Cheeks easily won re-election to represent Madison’s near west side over pro-police candidate Steve Fitzsimmons.
“We had a message of progress, about the city moving forward, about the reality of being a city that has a legacy of being a very good city and dealing with the challenge of being a great city for the next generation,” Cheeks told Madison365 after declaring victory. “People seemed really excited about that. And we worked really hard. We did over 6,000 doors and had tons of volunteers and supporters. This was made possible because we had so many people committed to this idea of Madison being a model city, to set an example for the rest of the nation of what it looks like to fight back against attacks from the state and national level.”
