MTZ Charitable Organization, the nonprofit arm of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for its new Family Life Center, a facility aimed at expanding access to education, health care and family support services in Madison.
The ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at 2019 Fisher St. Community leaders, donors, project partners and residents are expected to attend as officials mark the start of construction.
Once built, the center will house a food pantry, behavioral health clinic, counseling services, an academic learning center with tutoring and after-school programs, workshops for young adults, wellness and recreation offerings, and programming for older adults, among other services. Organizers describe it as a single, accessible gathering place meant to serve residents of all ages.
Rev. Dr. Marcus Allen of MTZ Charitable Organization said in a press release that the project reflects a long-held vision to address needs the community faces “every day,” and framed it as an investment meant to create lasting change.
The center’s capital campaign is seeking $8.8 million; more than $5 million has been committed so far. Construction is expected to begin this month, with completion anticipated in May 2027.
