The Madison Metropolitan School District will celebrate newly named Ezekiel Gillespie Middle School at a renaming ceremony on Friday.
MMSD’s Board of Education voted in February to rename Thomas Jefferson Middle School on Madison’s west side after Ezekiel Gillespie to honor the 19th-century civil rights pioneer. A total of 42 proposals for the school’s name were put forth amid the renaming process.
Gillespie, an African-American civil rights and community leader in Milwaukee, who won a landmark case securing voting rights.
MMSD Interim Superintendent Lisa Kvistad, the MMSD Board of Education and Principal Melanie Thiel will share remarks following a student performance at the renaming ceremony, according to a press release from MMSD.
