The League of Women Voters of Dane County (LWVDC) will hold a public forum, “Dane County Immigration Issues,” on Sept. 9, 6:30-8 p.m. at First Unitarian Society in Madison.
Longtime LWVDC member Gail Bliss will moderate the hybrid forum, which will cover the following topics: The basics of immigration; the immigration process; immigrants’ role in our economy; and immigrant rights.
Federal and state policies regarding immigration are rapidly changing and impacting communities across Wisconsin, LWVDC said in a press release, and this forum will explore the basics of immigration, the economic impact of the immigrant community, and the legal issues imposed by immigrant status across Dane County and how that impacts the rule of law.
LWVDC has assembled an expert panel to speak on the various topics that will include:
- Christine Neumann-Ortiz, founding executive director of Voces de la Frontera and Voces de la Frontera Action, will outline the process of immigrating to the US
- Armando Ibarra, Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor in the School for Workers and Chican@ and Latin@ Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will discuss immigrants’ vital role in our local economy
- Aissa Olivarez, managing attorney at the Community Immigration Law Center (CILC), will detail how immigrants are protected under the law
