Milwaukee-based positive news company Carvd N Stone has opened up its applications for its annual CNS Loren Martin Hintz Travel Writing Scholarship.
The scholarship now enters its fourth year of providing young writers with the opportunity to travel and advance their careers in writing. The scholarship was founded by Steve Hintz, son of former Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writer Loren Martin Hintz, to honor his father’s legacy of traveling the world and writing and capturing unique stories. This year’s ceremony will feature a gala-style event to honor the scholarship recipient.
Carved N Stone’s founder, Nyesha Stone, was approached by Steve Hintz to create an avenue for the next generation of writers to find their path as travel has been a central part of both Loren Martin Hintz and Stone. Travel also has been a cornerstone experience for Stone, and she wants Milwaukee inner-city youth to have their own experiences with a platform to talk about it.
Requirements for the scholarship involve writing an 800-word essay, be currently living in Milwaukee, and being 17-29 years old. $1,000 will be awarded to the recipient.
This year’s essay will ask: “In what ways has traveling away from your hometown and exploring new places changed you?”
This year will also mark the return of the ceremony for the scholarship recipient. The ceremony was initially held in the very first year, but difficulties in Carvd N Stone’s infancy led it to be tabled for later. Now, as Stone feels more established, she wants to bring the ceremony back.
“It just never felt right because I didn’t have the business right. I was struggling,” Stone said. “Now with us really growing our community and getting our engagement up, and, honestly, becoming sustainable. I think this is the perfect time to do a ceremony.”
The ceremony will be more gala-style. Stone doesn’t see many opportunities in Milwaukee to get dressed up and have a night on the town, so she wanted to create that opportunity.
“If I put on a gown right now or a dress and walk around Milwaukee, people look at you funny. But if you go to New York, it’s just a normal day,” she said.
The ceremony will highlight this year’s recipient, and will feature drinks, food and Milwaukee-based, Grammy-nominated cellist Malik Johnson providing music for the night.
Applications for the CNS Loren Martin Hintz Travel Writing Scholarship are open until Nov. 3. Applications can be submitted on Carvd N Stone’s website.
The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 11, 6-8 p.m., at Radio Milwaukee, 220 East Pittsburgh Ave., Milwaukee. Tickets are currently on sale.
