Derek Johnson, Director of Freshman Admissions at Edgewood College, has been named the 2016 Wisconsin Association for College Admission Counseling (WACAC) Admission Professional of the Year. The annual award recognizes and honors college and university admission professionals who exemplify excellence and dedication to serving the needs of students in their transition from high school to college.
“Derek’s work with students and their families is outstanding, and it’s gratifying to see that his colleagues across the state of Wisconsin recognize that as well,” Christine Benedict, Vice President for Enrollment Management said. “His compassion and commitment to community means students find the right fit for their college journeys, which we’re fortunate to see every day in our students.”
It’s been a busy year for accolades for Johnson who was recently honored with the Urban League of Greater Madison Young Professionals “Emerging Leader of the Year” award at their 2016 Emerge Gala. Johnson has been the Director of Freshman Admissions since 2014 at Edgewood College. Prior to that, he was Co-Director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion.
The WACAC is the state-level affiliate group of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling, the only professional association of members from secondary schools, community-based organizations, colleges and universities in the United States.
The WACAC seeks to help high school and community college students in Wisconsin prepare for collegiate study. A network of admission professionals, guidance counselors, academic support staff, and members of educational organizations work together to share best practices and maintain high standards in the profession of counseling students.
