Madison College’s District Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Jennifer Berne as the college’s next president, concluding an extensive national search, Madison College announced on Monday. Berne will succeed Dr. Jack E. Daniels III, who retired in January 2025 after 11 years of leadership.
Berne brings more than 30 years of experience in higher education as a faculty member, researcher, academic leader, and community college provost. Berne currently serves as provost of Oakland Community College in Michigan, a large, five-campus institution serving more than 23,000 students annually, according to a press release from Madison College, and as the college’s chief academic officer, she has driven new program development, expanded dual credit and workforce partnerships, led faculty-focused teaching and learning initiatives, and supported strategic enrollment efforts.
Berne was selected from four finalists during the national search.
“The board has selected a leader who understands Madison College’s impressive history and shares our bold vision for its future,” said Board Chair Donald D. Dantzler, Jr. in a press release. “We are deeply impressed by Dr. Berne’s unwavering commitment to student success, teaching and learning, and readiness to continue advancing the college’s strategic goals. She possesses the experience and passion necessary to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
A former community college faculty member and department chair, Berne has authored or co-authored multiple books and numerous scholarly publications on writing instruction, literacy, and faculty development. She is also an Aspen Presidential Fellow, part of a national network of leaders prepared to drive equitable outcomes at community colleges.
Berne has earned a doctorate from Michigan State University, a master’s degree from Northeastern University, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. On May 1, she will graduate from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business with her master’s in business administration.
“Madison College is poised for transformative success, and I am honored to be part of it,” Berne said. “I was immediately impressed by the dedicated faculty and staff I’ve met, the engaged partners throughout the community, beautiful spaces and facilities, and the incredible backdrop of the district Madison College serves. What stood out to me was the deep pride people feel for this college and the meaningful purpose behind everything happening here.”
Berne will assume the role on July 1.
