Freedom Inc. will host its annual Health Day to spread awareness of its campaigns, promote health and increase access to resources on Saturday, Aug. 9.
Freedom Inc. is a Black and Southeast Asian nonprofit that works with low- to no-income communities of color. The annual Health Day event brings the community together for free family fun with food, games, and community resources, along with the continuation of its more recent 5k walk.
“It’s really an opportunity for our Black and Southeast Asian communities to be in concert with each other,” said Jnae Thompson, data coordinator with Freedom Inc. “We really prioritize our folks getting in contact with healthcare resources.”
Health Day also marks a wrap-up to Freedom Inc.’s summer programs like its Youth Organizing Camp and Books and Breakfast Program. Following the summer programs ending, Freedom Inc. will give a look into its plans for the rest of the year and its goals for the following year.
Next year, Freedom Inc. aims to sustain its LGBTQ programs and services and its campaign to abolish school meal debt.
The latter campaign launched last year with the Democratic Socialists of America to abolish $235,000 in school meal lunch debt and call for Madison Metropolitan School District to transition to a universal meal system by providing free lunches for students.
“It’s important now more than ever because regardless of these targeted attacks, our people exist,” Thompson said. “Not only do our people exist, but we do deserve love and dignity and understanding and an opportunity to take up space.”
Health Day will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at its office on Luann Lane. Registration is still open online for its 5k walk at 11 a.m.. Registration is also available on the day of.
