Representative Steve King, the nine-term Iowa Republican with a long history of controversial and racist comments, lost his bid for renomination early Wednesday morning.
An anti-immigrant conservative, King had been one of the nation’s most divisive elected officials. He lost in a five-way race to state Sen. Randy Feenstra, who had won endorsements from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Right to Life Committee.
King made controversial comments in an interview with The New York Times in 2019, in which he asked, “White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization — how did that language become offensive?”
King was stripped of his committee assignments by his own party after the interview with The New York Times.
