High costs for equipment, uniforms, and league fees have historically discouraged many kids of color from participating in playing on baseball teams at all levels. With that in mind, the Black Men Coalition of Dane County will be kicking off its second season of free summer baseball league for children ages 4-12 at Elver Park on Saturday, May 27.
The Black Men Coalition Youth Baseball (BMC-YB) summer league hopes to drive excitement around baseball for kids and provide a space for Black youth to have representation in a sport with a significant history of Black achievement and participation. Corey Marionneaux, Black Men Coalition of Dane County founder and president, is happy to bring the opportunity back for a baseball league that was very successful in its first season last year.
“I asked the kids at the end of the year what they want to do for the rest of the summer,” Marionneaux told Madison365. “They all responded, ‘Practice baseball!’ That was amazing to me, because for most kids, it was their first season ever playing baseball.”
With over 250 kids signed up last year, the league was a hit with youth in the Madison area looking to participate in inclusive, fun, and accessible baseball. Girls and boys ages 4 to 12 are all encouraged to register before May 1st. Marionneaux was certain that experience and community interest from last year will help keep this year running smoothly to bring more games, coaches, and equipment for the kids.
“Support is coming in now without us even asking,” said Marionneaux. “We haven’t really started promoting that we need donations, and they’re just doing it. I think that’s so cool, and it says a lot about our community. People really do care about the younger generation and want the best for them.”
Black Men Coalition Youth Baseball’s mission is to “provide a supportive
high-quality, no-cost baseball program, welcoming to all, where players have fun,
improve their skills, and have unforgettable life lessons.” With equipment and registration being free, the youth league looks to provide all kids with the materials and environment to grow in both skill and confidence.
Marionneeuax appreciates the support from the community and considers the potential they could reach with sponsorships and donations, especially for the kid’s year-end banquet where they receive awards and season memorabilia.
“We’re looking for a sponsor,” Marionneaux said. “My idea is to have the banquet at a really nice, elegant place, so our kids can experience such things, as well, and have a good memory. I want them to be able to come and get their medallion and be able to speak for a couple of minutes … have time for them and cheer them on as we like to do.”
Marionneaux was also happy to report that the season schedule will be easier to keep track of for families also, as a physical copy will be given to all kids on opening day. The league is sure to build confidence for kids as there is no need to have any prior experience in baseball to participate. Along with more confidence, the opportunity to build friendships and connections for players and their families will surely be invaluable again for another season of fun.
“The kids start becoming friends with each other and look forward to seeing each other once they get to the ballpark,” recalled Marionneaux with joy. “Parents communicate with each other to get to know each other and are supportive of other people’s kids. All of that was what we were looking for, and we saw it happen.”
