About a year ago, Sabrina Madison had a vision for revolutionizing the lives of African-American women in the greater Madison area. Affectionately known as Heymiss Progress, Madison has spent much of 2018 gathering funds and forming connections as she sought to build a dedicated space for Black women.
On Saturday, November 3, she will open The Progress Center For Black Women in a public event starting at 1 pm. The Progress Center, located at 5936 Seminole Centre Court in Fitchburg, will have a Grand Opening and Open House called “Toast to Progress”.
Since 2017, Madison has been asking people for ideas for how to use the new space as well as feverishly fundraising, having raised over $102,000 to date. Investors in the new Center have been invited to a special portion of the event beginning at 11 am on Saturday.
All of next week, November 5-10, Madison will host an Open House event on the site as well from 7 am – 6 pm, Monday thru Friday, and on Saturday from 11 am – 3 pm.
Madison, who was named one of Essence Magazine’s Woke 100 Women of 2018 is hoping to create a legacy of black women being able to break through barriers, particularly in the workplace, and gain positions of power.
The Progress Center will have a computer lab for learning, a community kitchen and reading materials.
The event is open to investors at 11 am and to the general public at 1 pm. It is free to attend but registration is requested.
