Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, a Republican, has cancelled plans to send National Guard troops to support patrols of the United States’ southwest border over President Trump’s policy of separating families of undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers, according to the Boston Globe.
A helicopter crew from the Massachusetts National Guard was scheduled to deploy later this month to help patrol the border.
But Baker said Monday that Massachusetts won’t participate until the administration changes the family separation policy, which he called “cruel and inhumane.”
President Trump has repeatedly falsely blamed Democrat-backed legislation for the policy, and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen claimed there was no policy of family separation even as her own department reported 2,000 children had been separated from parents at the border over a six-week period.
