Robert Mueller Announces He Will Leave Justice Department, Reiterates Trump Not Exonerated

Special counsel Robert Mueller announced that he was resigning Wednesday as the Special Counsel made a statement on his findings more than a month after a redacted version of the Mueller report was released.

“We are formally closing the special counsel’s office and as well I am resigning from the Department of Justice to return to private life,” Mueller said.

Mueller said that charging President Donald Trump with obstruction of justice was “not an option” because of Justice Department policy against charging a sitting president.

“If we had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said that,” Mueller said. “A president cannot be charged with a federal crime while he is in office. That is unconstitutional.”

Mueller said he does not expect to speak publicly about the investigation again.

“It is important that the office’s written work speaks for itself,” Mueller said.

A longtime registered Republican, Mueller served under presidents from both political parties.
