The Urban League of Greater Madison will host its Urban Cabaret to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Dr. Ruben Anthony’s leadership and to thank the community for its support on Friday, Oct. 10.
The Urban Cabaret has been a signature fundraising event of the Urban League for the past decade. Some changes have occurred with different modes and venues, like its online version during the COVID-19 pandemic, a hiatus for two years and moving it to the Black Business Hub in 2024 with its official opening. However, this year will see the Urban League of Greater Madison return the celebration to the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center.
“Making the community aware of all the things we’ve done with the funding and resources that we get from the community is important,” said Ed Lee, senior vice president of the Urban League. “I also think it’s an opportunity to say thanks to many of our supporters and really help raise the money we need to continue doing our work next year.”
The event will feature a diverse mix of local and national artists from music, dance, comedy, magic, poetry, and more. Proceeds from the celebration will raise money to support the many free community empowerment programs the Urban League administers throughout the year.
Artists present include people like Rob “Rob Dz” Franklin, musician and driving force behind events like Mad Lit; Desiree Mayo, community focused artist; Steven Espada Dawson, current Madison Poet Laureate; John Crim; a native Madison dancer now in New York; Adem Tesfaye; award-winning song-writer and guitarist; Matthew Teauge; magician who has put on shows in the greater Madison area and has been seen on CBS show Penn and Teller: Fool Us; Ogunde Treymanye, actor from Gary, In. that has appeared in many theaters across Wisconsin; and other local and national talents.
The Urban Cabaret will be held Oct. 10, starting at 6 p.m. at the Monona Terrace, 1 John Nolen Dr. Tickets are currently on sale.
