Kate Toews defeated early frontrunner Ali Muldrow for Seat Six on the Madison Metropolitan School Board Tuesday night, winning 56 percent of the vote.
Muldrow topped the three-way primary in February. In March, newspaper accounts of a remark she made at a candidate forum left the impression that she supports school choice vouchers, which she has said she does not. School choice is a hotbutton issue, and Toews remained clearly consistent in her opposition.
“(Politics) is not something I ever felt I belonged in,” Muldrow said in her concession speech as she thanked supporters. “A lot of this was reimagining the world that we live in. A lot of this was deciding things you’ve never seen before are possible and believing that and pursuing that.”
Muldrow remained optimistic in the face of defeat.
“What matters is what we do tomorrow,” she said. “What matters is how we recover from that. There is so much possibility in this place right now. There is so much power and strength and love and respect for one another, and that can’t be stifled by the result of an election.”
“I was inspired by her campaign throughout,” said Alder Maurice Cheeks, who easily won re-election.
