The Madison Metropolitan Chapter of The Links, Incorporated (Madison Links) will host its annual African-American Student Recognition Program on Sunday, June 2, at Madison College, 1701 Wright Street (Mitby Gym). The Student Recognition Program, which has been a staple for the community over the past 20 years, will honor exceptional students and parent volunteers in the greater Madison school district attendance area.
The Student Recognition Program recognizes over 800 students annually and has awarded more than $175,000 in scholarships over the years.
“Our collaborative effort with the Madison Metropolitan School District and other community partners continues to be one of the most anticipated partnerships in recognizing student achievement,” says Julia Holman, president of the Madison Links, in a statement. “By design, the program aims to inspire student success and has had a remarkable impact on those receiving awards.”
“We view our program as proof positive that we have an amazing pool of student talent in our school districts,” adds Camille Carter in a statement. Carter is the chair of the Services to Youth Facet Committee, which plans the program annually. “It is important for us to pause and encourage each of these students because we have seen how the support motivates them to excel in school.”
Through the program, elementary, middle and high school students are recognized for academic achievement and good citizenship, among other things. Elementary school students will be recognized in a ceremony that begins at 1:30 p.m. followed by a ceremony for middle and high school students that begins at 3:15 p.m.
Dr. Jack E. Daniels, III, president of Madison College; Carolyn Stanford Taylor, Wisconsin Superintendent of Public Instruction; and Dr. Jennifer Cheatham, Superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District will be on hand for part of the programming to welcome the students and parents being honored.
