The percentage of coronavirus tests coming back positive went up from two to four percent as 426 new cases were reported Tuesday, bringing the statewide total to 23,881 — of which about 5,100 remain active. As recently as two weeks ago, more than 6,300 cases were considered active.
Additionally, six people died of COVID19 in the past 24 hours, including four in Milwaukee County.
The largest local increase in new cases today comes from Milwaukee County, with 195 new cases and just over 11 percent of tests coming back positive.
Today’s new cases were spread throughout the state, with a number of counties posting double-digit increases:
Brown County: 13 new cases, 3.8 percent positive tests
Dane County: 21 new cases, 3.64 percent positive tests
Kenosha County: 10 new cases, 1.91 percent positive tests
La Crosse County: 27 new cases, 17 percent positive tests
Outagamie County: 12 new cases, 6.56 percent positive tests
Racine County: 14 new cases, 3.47 percent positive tests
Waukesha County: 16 new cases, 1.67 percent positive tests
Winnebago County: 18 new cases, 4.22 percent positive tests
Of the 21 new cases confirmed in Dane County, 13 are younger than 30: two are under 10 years of age, two are 10-19, and nine are in the 20-29 age range.
Hospitalizations statewide are down to 241, six fewer than yesterday and 65 fewer than a week ago. Of those currently hospitalized for COVID-19, 82 require intensive care. Additionally, 182 people are hospitalized and awaiting test results.
The rate of disparity in Latino populations continues to stand out — 33 percent of total cases are now Latino people, and 26 percent of today’s new cases. Latinos make up just seven percent of the state’s overall population.
Similarly, 19 percent of all cases are Black people, with 10 percent of today’s new cases and 25 percent of total COVID-19 related deaths in the state. Black people make up just six percent of the state’s population.
DHS also reports that 76 percent of those confirmed to have been infected have recovered and three percent have died.
