Dane County breaks coronavirus record again: 105 new cases today

Dane County coronavirus cases continued a sharp increase Thursday, as 105 new cases were reported — by far the highest single-day increase to date.

The increase comes a day after the county posted a then-record 71 new cases. The previous high had been 40 on Monday.

On Wednesday, Public Health Madison Dane County (PHMDC) tweeted that 25 percent of new cases from June 1-22 — 99 out of 400 — reported attending a gathering of family or friends.

By contrast, only seven reported having attended a protest.

PHMDC did not immediately respond to an inquiry as to whether today’s or yesterday’s new cases were connected to an existing cluster, or to any specific facilities.

Today’s new cases continue the trend of most new cases being discovered in younger people. Of the 105, three are in children under 10, four are aged 10-19, and 67 are aged 20-29.

Dane County reports no new fatalities today, leaving the death toll here at 32.

We will have another update of statewide statistics this afternoon.
