Dane County confirmed 162 new coronavirus cases this morning, as new cases continue to spread slowly among age groups other than the 10-29 age range.
Today’s new cases bring the total for the county to 8,802 as of this morning. There are 6,958 recovered cases while 1,803 are currently active. This drops the percentage of active cases to 20.48 percent.
Most of the 162 new cases were attributed to tests processed September 19, with 154 positive cases reported for that date while seven were attributed to September 18. The rest of the positive cases were attributed to other dates this past week. September 9 continues to hold the record for a single day increase with 487 positive cases attributed to that day.
The percentage of cases in age groups in 10-19 and in their 20s continue to drop as cases have continued to spread to other ages. Though slightly larger than yesterday’s percentage, almost 36 percent of cases were in those aged 10-19 with 58 new cases and almost 34 percent were in those in their 20s with 55 new cases. No further breakdown in the age group between 10-19 was provided for today’s numbers.
Since September 6, cases in ages 10-19 have grown by 139 percent, while cases in those in their 20s have grown by 36.7 percent in the last two weeks. Cases in children aged 0-9 have grown by 18.75 percent for the same time period.
Adults in other ages groups also grew by double digits today with 15 new cases for those in their 30s and 14 for those in their 40s. There were also 10 new cases for those in their 50, seven for those in their 70s while adults in their 80s grew by two and children aged 0-9 grew by one additional case.
Dane County’s death toll from COVID-19 remained at 41 today. As of this morning, hospitalizations for patients with COVID-19 remained at 17 in Dane County, with three of those in the ICU. The total number of Dane County residents ever to be hospitalized for COVID-19 is still at 352 as of this morning.
Dane County’s seven-day average for cases is now at 165.7 while the 14-day average is now 188.3 cases per day. The Forward Dane reopening plan required that the daily new case average fall below 20 before moving to the next phase. On Wednesday, PHMDC announced that they would be stepping up enforcement on bars and restaurants with the assistance with Madison Police.
The most updated data on positive test percentage for a single day is for September 19, which is 4.1 percent, while the positive test percentage for September 18 is 3.9. The positive percentage for September 17 has been updated to 3.8 percent and September 15 is at 5.3 percent. Madison365 expects that these numbers will be adjusted as more negative and positive tests are fully processed and attributed to the appropriate dates in the coming days. On Thursday, a new Data Snapshot from Public Health Madison Dane County (PHMDC) reported 72 percent of all new cases the September 1-14 were from UW students and staff. It also noted that for those dates, only 3 percent of cases for those two weeks were aged 0-17 while 80 percent of all new cases were between the ages of 18-22.
According to the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s data dashboard, as of 2 pm yesterday, Public Health of Madison and Dane County and UW testing had confirmed 91 new positive cases from UW. Of that 91, 75 came from on campus testing and 16 from off campus. In total, there were 89 additional new positive tests for students and two for employees. UW did also say yesterday that they have begun testing students in Chadbourne Hall, but have not yet taken action with regards to quarantining that residence. Next steps will be determined once results have returned.
According to UW’s data dashboard, they have attributed all of the 91 positive tests to September 18. UW attributes positive tests to the date results are received and not on the date a test was taken. PHMDC attributes results to the day a test was taken.
The seven day average of UW-related cases per day has decreased to 112.4. The seven-day percentage of positives for students on campus is at 7.0 percent. In total, there are now 2,602 positive cases from UW: 2,555 from students and 47 from employees. UW students continue to make up 98.1 percent of all UW cases. Of those 2,555 cases, 1,787 were identified in on-campus testing. As of this morning, UW has run 33,613 tests since on campus testing began on August 6 with 5.3 percent of those tests coming back positive.
