A “Black Lives Matter” sign outside Crestwood Elementary School on Madison’s west side was vandalized and covered with white paint, according to a photo shared with Madison365.

Madison Metropolitan School District spokesman Ian Folger told Madison365 that the district is aware of the incident and has filed a police report. He said the school has security cameras, and video is being reviewed.

It is unclear when the vandalism occurred. A Crestwood Elementary school parent, who wished to remain anonymous, told Madison365 that the sign had not been vandalized as of June 11, the last day of classes.

The sign was designed by fifth graders in 2020, and parents raised funds to have it made and installed, the parent said.

Folger said building services staff were working Monday to clean and restore the sign.
