California Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered all California residents, nearly 40 million people, to stay in their homes until further notice to slow the spread of coronavirus, according to multiple media outlets.

The order came about an hour after Los Angeles County issued a similar order, and days after the San Fransisco Bay Area adopted similar restrictions.

The order takes effect immediately and will be in place indefinitely. It allows exemptions for public safety and health care operations as well as other essential services, including laundromats, grocery stores, and restaurants that offer takeout or delivery.
