Vilas County authorities in Northern Wisconsin have arrested one person after shots were allegedly fired at Ojibwe spear fishers, the Associated Press reports.
The Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission reported in a statement that the incident took place Saturday night on Little Saint Germain Lake, about 25 miles north of Rhinelander. The spear-fishers said they had been harassed and shots were fired.
The AP reported that GLIFWC law enforcement officers and Vilas County Sheriff’s deputies responded, and one person was arrested for being armed while intoxicated. No further details were available.
A Nineteenth Century treaty that ceded much of Northern Wisconsin to the federal government allows Ojibwe people to hunt, fish and harvest rice across the region. Anger among white anglers led to violent clashes in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
