For over 50 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County has been a beacon of hope and opportunity for children. With a mission to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the potential in every child, BBBS has impacted countless lives, helping young people realize their dreams and build brighter futures. Through a variety of programs and community events, BBBS continues to foster meaningful connections and empower the next generation of leaders.
The Power of Mentorship
At the heart of BBBS’s mission is the belief that every child has the potential to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances. However, many children face significant challenges that can hinder their ability to thrive. This is where BBBS steps in, providing these children with mentors (or Bigs) who serve as positive role models, confidants, and friends.
The impact of mentorship is profound. Research shows that children who have a mentor through BBBS are more likely to excel academically, develop stronger relationships, and make healthier lifestyle choices. By matching children with caring adults, BBBS helps them build the confidence and skills they need to achieve their full potential.
Programs Tailored to the Needs of Every Child
BBBS of Dane County offers several innovative programs designed to meet the unique needs of the children they serve. Each program is carefully crafted to provide support, guidance, and opportunities for growth.
Community-Based Mentoring
Community-Based Mentoring is the cornerstone of BBBS’s work. In this program, Bigs and Littles are matched based on shared interests, personalities, and preferences. Once matched, they meet regularly to engage in a variety of activities, from exploring local parks to attending sporting events or simply hanging out and talking. This flexible program allows for a wide range of experiences, providing Littles with the support they need to navigate life’s challenges.
Site-Based Mentoring
In partnership with local schools, BBBS offers a Site-Based Mentoring program that focuses on academic success and personal development. In this program, Bigs meet their Littles at school during lunch or after school, helping with homework, providing encouragement, and fostering a positive attitude toward learning. This program not only supports academic achievement, but also helps Littles build stronger relationships with their peers and teachers.
Supporting Local Kids, One Match at a Time
In Sun Prairie, Stoughton, and Madison’s east side, the need for mentors is great. These communities have a significant number of youth waiting for positive role models who can help them grow and thrive. The goal is to provide support to as many kids as possible in these areas, but the organization needs dedicated mentors to make that happen.
BBBS is intentional about making each match meaningful by pairing kids with mentors who live nearby and align with the unique wishes of both the child and their family. By considering geography as well as personal preferences, they create relationships that are convenient and accessible, helping mentors stay involved and allowing kids to feel a strong sense of connection and support right where they live.
Signature Events: Celebrating Community and Raising Support
BBBS’s success is not just about the programs it offers—it’s also about the vibrant community that rallies behind its mission. Throughout the year, BBBS hosts a variety of events that celebrate the power of mentorship, raise crucial funds, and engage the community in meaningful ways.
