An alert from the University of Wisconsin Tuesday said there were reports of shots fired outside the UW Hospital Emergency Department.
Staff in the area were advised to take shelter and secure doors, and others were advised to avoid the area. Another alert 10 minutes later said a suspect was in custody and there is no threat to the public.
Later Tuesday, UW Police said in a statement that two officers with the City of Fitchburg Police Department were transporting a subject into the Emergency Department for evaluation and treatment. When the subject was being moved to another area in the waiting room, he attempted to disarm one of the police officers and during the struggle one round was fired into the ceiling of the waiting room, according to the statement. According to the statement, officers quickly regained control of the subject and he was taken into custody and no one was injured.
