A coalition of University of Wisconsin campus organizations will hold a rally to show solidarity with and raise money for asylum seekers at the southern border, some of whom were assaulted with tear gas by border patrol officers Sunday.
The event, co-sponsored by the Young Democratic Socialists of American UW-Madison chapter, International Socialist Organization – Madison, Mecha de UW Madison, Madison Socialist Alternative and Indivisible Madison, will take place tonight from 6 to 7 pm on Library Mall at the west end of State Street.
“This was a direct continuation of the militarization of the border prompted by the Trump administration, who continue to use anti-immigrant rhetoric to whip up fear in response to the caravan. We cannot let this blatant xenophobia go uncontested,” organizers wrote on the Facebook entry for the event. “This is a call to all who support immigrant’s rights to asylum. Raise your voices in solidarity with the migrant caravan!”
Organizers also say they will collect donations to send direct and immediate aid to the border.
