The Dane County Youth Governance Program (YGP) — an initiative that encourages students to engage in county government decision-making and provides a youth perspective for local projects and community issues — is accepting applications for the 2025-2026 cohort until Friday, June 20.

“The Youth Governance Program gives students the opportunity to play an active role in advancing Dane County initiatives, ensuring that the perspectives of Dane County youth are heard and valued in shaping their own futures,” said County Board Chair Patrick Miles in a press release.

Participants of the YGP, which was established in 2012, are students who will be in grades 10-12 in fall of 2025, and will work closely with Dane County Board Supervisors who will act as mentors to help develop their skills in civic engagement. YGP participants have the same opportunities for committee participation and involvement as elected county supervisors, with the distinction that their vote is advisory and non-binding.

Additionally, participants meet regularly and work closely with other youth in the program on a project presentation to present to the County Board at the end of the YGP term.
