Double the grind, double the greatness

Meet Ma’riah Lee and Ma’kenzie Lee. Eighth grade twins from Milwaukee who just wrapped up another championship run, winning their second straight 2025 Milwaukee School City Wide Girls Basketball Championship at Shining Star. Back to back city champions. The kind of thing that sounds simple on paper, but anybody who has been around youth basketball knows there is nothing simple about repeating. Everybody comes for you the second time. You do not surprise anyone. You are the standard. And the Lee twins embraced that weight and carried it like it was theirs from the beginning.

What stands out first is toughness. Real Milwaukee toughness. The kind you feel in the way they defend, in the way they battle for loose balls, in the way they keep coming when other teams are tired. These two play with tenacity and with pride. They are not allergic to hard moments. They run toward them. They hate losing, not because it bruises the ego, but because they expect more from themselves and from each other. That edge is rare at any level, and even rarer this young.

You can see it in their mindset, too. On their website they have a simple phrase that tells you everything you need to know about how they move. Double the Grind. Double the Greatness. That is not just a catchy line. That is a mirror. That is how they practice, how they compete, and how they carry themselves. They push each other. They sharpen each other. They are wired to grow. And the scary part for opponents is that they are just getting started.

They play for Shining Star, but they also play for something deeper than a school name. They play for their city. For their family. For the little girls in Milwaukee who need to see what commitment looks like in real time. They are building a legacy right now, not waiting for high school to start the story.

The Lee twins are winners. But more than that, they are workers. And when you mix that kind of work ethic with that kind of competitive fire, you get something special. Milwaukee has a lot of talent. Wisconsin has a lot of talent. But there is a different kind of spark when the chemistry is built in, when two players share the same heartbeat, and when both refuse to let the other settle for average.

So remember their names. Ma’riah Lee. Ma’kenzie Lee. Two eighth graders. Two champions. Two relentless competitors. And if their slogan is true, and I believe it is, then Milwaukee is about to witness the next chapter of double greatness.
